Construction de l’État et renforcement des capacités de l’État

La construction de l’État et la capacité de l’État sont au cœur du développement. Nous analysons ces questions sous différents angles : 

Construction de l’État En utilisant des données des archives coloniales pour une perspective historique, nous analysons l’Empire colonial français et comparons les finances publiques françaises et britanniques en Afrique de l’Ouest colonisée. Nous étudions également le lien entre la période coloniale et le postcolonial, de l’époque des indépendances jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

Capacité de l’État La recherche porte en parallèle sur la manière d’évaluer et d’améliorer la capacité de l’État lui-même. Nous étudions l’application de la loi. La capacité de l’État est importante pour la fourniture de services publics, notamment en raison du potentiel de corruption. Des approches théoriques et empiriques sont développées. 

Conflit Un volet de la recherche porte sur les conflits. Nous analysons à la fois les déterminants et les conséquences de la salience de l’identification ethnique. Des travaux complémentaires portent sur les stratégies des acteurs engagés dans des conflits violents (c’est-à-dire les acteurs étatiques, les groupes d’insurgés et les civils). Ce travail comprend l’identification des politiques qui contribuent à la résolution des conflits et à la protection des civils dans les zones de conflit.
